Maarten Van Ooijen, Dutch Politician State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport (resigned) #VWS

Van Ooijen attended pre-university education at the Ichthus College in Veenendaal from 2002 to 2008. He then studied at Utrecht University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology from 2009 to 2011 and a master’s degree in public administration from 2012 to 2015. He was also a member of Sola Scriptura during his student days.

From 2011 to 2014, he was a member of the Christian Union faction in Utrecht and from 2012 to 2014 he was also active as national chairman of PerspectieF, the youth organization of the Christian Union. From 2015 to June 1, 2018, he worked as a consultant at Lysias Advies, part of the Lysias Consulting Group. There he was involved in consultancy for the public sector.

After the municipal elections of 2014, Van Ooijen ended up in the Utrecht municipal council as a municipal councilor and faction leader of the Christian Union. After the 2018 municipal elections, the Christian Union formed a council with GroenLinks and D66. From June 7, 2018, he was alderman of Utrecht on behalf of the Christian Union and had Social Support, Welfare, Asylum and Integration, Sports and the Vleuten-De Meern District in his portfolio.

In January 2019, he was elected Best Young Director of 2018 by the magazine Domestic Governance. Since January 10, 2022, he has been State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport in the Rutte IV cabinet, succeeding his party colleague Paul Blokhuis. In his portfolio he has:

War victims and resistance participants;
WMO and informal care;
Social shelter and sheltered housing;
Prevention;
Health promotion (lifestyle);
VWS domain for BES islands;
Youth policy, Youth Act and youth health care;
GGD in municipal domain.
